Hello Otto,

I shall look for that book. I'll find it and send copies.
Hegi 2nd ed. s.v. Ribes nigrum: "Das Indigenat dieser eurasiatischen Waldpflanze steht wie

Summer greetings, R. rubrum is just ripe!

Dear listmembers (at least those not on holidays...),
Together with an actuo-ecological colleague, I am working on a
book on autochthonous trees and shrubs in the Netherlands
and Belgium. On the basis of archaeobotanical research, I concluded
(following Henk van Haaster) that Ribes species might not be native
in the Netherlands, since all finds (except for one, see below) in
the Netherlands are from medieval and modern times.
Recently, one Ribes spec. seed was however discovered from
the Late Mesolithic (5500 cal BC) site Hardinxveld-De Bruin by
Corrie Bakels e.a.
First of all: my colleague claims that SEEDS of Ribes should be
identifyable to species level (and not only the fruit bases that
are regularly identified to species in archaeobotanical studies).
Does anyone of you know publications about their identification
criteria??
Secondly: I would be interested to hear about pre-medieval
finds (so prehistoric and/or Roman) of Ribes remains, especially
those identified to species level in Europe. Pollen might also be a
source of information, as this can be identified to species(groups)
as well (therefore I Cc-ed this message to some palynological
colleagues).
Many thanks in advance for your reactions,
Otto Brinkkemper
