Dear Marianne and Stefi,
In one or two of the modern emmer collections which I have examined, a
significant number of spikelets contained 3 well-developed grains. The
third one was often slightly smaller than the main 2 grains, but not at all
"runty". This material was in spikelet form, not in ears, so I don't know
to what extent these 3-grained spikelets occurred throughout the ears of
the population. Also, I did not keep a record of how many 3-grained
spikelets there were compared to normal 2 grained spikelets. These emmers
were grown under good conditions, but I don't have any detailed agronomic
information. The material I have has made it clear that in some cases, some
varieties can make 3 well-formed grains in the spikelet.
Best wishes,
Delwen Samuel
