RESEARCH ASSOCIATE, statistical genetics
Salary £22,116-£29,699 inclusive of London Allowance
This appointment is for four years, starting 1 March 2005 (later by agreement)
This four-year post is funded by a British Heart Foundation programme grant aimed at investigating a large number of genes for any role underlying the insulin-resistance syndrome that contributes substantially to illness and death from cardiovascular disease and type-2 diabetes. The populations to be investigated include West London men of South Asian origin, who have a high prevalence of the syndrome, as well as UK Caucasians. The post-holder will contribute to fine-tuning the design of this multi-stage study, as well as data handling and management, and analysing and reporting the results of the study. The overall project is led by Professor James Scott, and involves collaborators from Imperial College and the NHS, as well as the University of Oxford and the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. The postholder will be responsible to Professor David Balding, in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at the St Mary's, Paddington, campus of Imperial College.
The post holder will have a PhD in statistical genetics or genetic epidemiology or related field (statistics, epidemiology, population genetics, bioinformatics, mathematics). The level of appointment will be commensurate with skills and relevant research experience in the fields of: study design and data management, population and statistical genetics, and scientific computer programming.
