HEALTH & SAFETY EXECUTIVE (HSE),
Safety and Enforcement Statistics Unit.
Statistical Officers (2 posts) Bootle, Merseyside.
Salary range £19,715-£21,800 + attractive benefits.
Permanent Appointments Part-time/Job Share applications welcome.
HSE's Safety and Enforcement Statistics Unit plays a key part in our
mission to understand and reduce the incidence of workplace injury. We
provide the detailed analysis, interpretation and communication of injury
trends, drawing on a wide range of data sources, that allows progress to be
monitored and stronger approaches identified.
Taking a lead from the Government's Revitalising Health and Safety
strategy, these two posts focus on improving and extending our
capabilities, and on developing innovative methodologies for workplace
research. Both positions involve a wide variety of tasks and projects -
ranging across statistical modelling, analysis and interpretation; to
providing advice to non-statisticians; to the development of research
strategies and large-scale investigations – but with some difference in
emphasis: Post A [ref B4S0 (A)] concentrates on investigating and
explaining incidences and trends; while Post B [ref B4S0 (B)] focuses in
particular on analysis of key survey data. Either role offers wide scope
for career development, including line management.
Non-negotiable requirements include an Honours degree with substantial
statistics content, confident IT skills and working experience of analysing
datasets, compiling statistics and modelling results; but the ability to
communicate readily with others, including non-technical audiences, is also
very important, and proficiency in commonly used specialist software - for
example, Access, Stata or SPSS - will be an advantage.
If you have the trained skills and qualities we're looking for, we can
offer you excellent prospects in the company of a respected, influential,
professional team - as well as rewards that include an attractive final
salary pension scheme, open career structures and enlightened employment
practices. To apply, visit our website at www.hse.gov.uk or

or telephone Bernie Clayton on 0151 951 5833 for an application form and
prospectus.
Closing date for applications: 30 July 2004.
HSE is committed to equality of opportunity and we aim to reflect the
diversity of the community we protect. Applications from individuals are
encouraged regardless of gender, marital status, race, colour, ethnic or
national origins, sexual orientation, working pattern, religion or belief,
or disability.
