4. APPLIED LINGUISTICS AND THE TEACHING OF ENGLISH AND MODERN LANGUAGES

Abden House, University of Edinburgh campus
The Subject Centre for Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies, in conjunction with The University of Edinburgh and Scottish CILT, is hosting a one-day Seminar on Applied Linguistics and the Teaching of English and Modern Languages on 19 January 2005 at Abden House on Edinburgh University campus.
This seminar will explore ways in which the two distinct target audiences for the work produced by applied linguists in the area of language teaching and learning, namely people in ELT and in Modern Languages, can overlap increasingly so that shared problems can be addressed jointly and shared solutions developed.

SUBJECT CENTRE CALLS FOR BIDS
5. MATERIALS DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS
The Subject Centre is seeking to expand and develop its Materials Bank resource.
We are inviting bids for small-scale projects (max £5000 per project) which will develop new materials that can be made available for sharing across the sector. Further details and an application form can be found at: www.llas.ac.uk . The closing date for applications is 30th November 2004 and projects will begin in January 2005.

9. TRAVEL BURSARIES
The Subject Centre has set aside funding to award travel bursaries to those attending its workshops and conferences. Two bursaries of up to £50 will be available for each workshop. special consideration will be given to applications from part-time, hourly paid and new staff. Successful applicants will be asked to write a brief report (up to 500 words) on the workshop they have attended. An application form will be available on our website by 10 November.
