Not in my day they didn't. My two Landrovers (both series two) had one
four speed box with a separate high/low box.

How things change. Mine were both totally reliable despite being
constantly abused and the second 23 years old when I bought it.
The first had an auxiliary hand throttle and PTO.
Neither had floss like screen washer or heater.
