The aim of this conference is to promote the effective application of
geophysical methods in the investigation of brownfield sites.
Geophysics is still considered the poor relation to traditional site
investigation methods by many environmental professionals because it has
been misapplied or, more commonly, is the tool of the last chance
saloon. Considering a geophysical survey only when all other techniques
have failed is not generally the most effective approach. It often
results in the geophysicist being able to give, at best, a cautious
prognosis for the success of the survey and more typically, professional
and responsible advice that the survey target is likely to be beyond the
resolution of standard geophysical methods. A self-fulfilling prophesy
for the geophysical disbeliever!

This conference is being held to reaffirm good practice in geophysics in
the context of brownfield site investigation, to present case studies of
geophysics supplementing and aiding more routinely employed methods of
investigation (whilst not ignoring the limitations of geophysics) and
also to provide a forum to present the more novel and innovative
applications of geophysics in this setting.

It is intended that the sessions will include contributions from
environmental engineers and geologists, geophysicists, representatives
of regulatory bodies, academia and others with experience of remote
mapping and assessment of brownfield sites. It is encouraged that the
audience should include those from a wide range of technical backgrounds
and with all levels of experience / confidence in geophysical methods.

Registration for the day will be charged at £35 for Geological Society
members, £40 for non-members and £25 for students, payable on the door
(cash and cheques made payable to ‘EIGG’ only). This price includes
entrance to the conference, a buffet lunch and refreshments during the
morning and afternoon breaks. A 20% discount is given for early
registration (£28 members, £32 non-members, £20 students). Pre-register

Exhibitors are welcome at this event. The broad and topical nature of
this conference is likely to attract a large and diverse audience. It
is anticipated that this event will provide a good opportunity to
promote a related service.

Call for papers
Abstracts are invited on all aspects of geophysics and geotechnology
including case studies, new technologies, methodologies and good
practice in the application of all geophysical methods to brownfield
site investigation. Talks are welcome from industrial and commercial
suppliers, regulators, practitioners and researchers, including
postgraduate students.

Both oral presentations (15-20 minutes with 5 minutes for questions) and
posters are requested. Titles and 100-200 word abstracts should be
emailed to the conference convenors by 10th January 2005.
