Hello Green fellow travellers:
We have just put my Tribute to Rudolf Bahro (1935-1997), on the occasion
of his death, on our web site. It is situated on the page called "A Taste
of Green Web Writings and Left Biocentrism." This Tribute was published in
a number of places. It was also translated into Spanish. For more on Bahro,
see the Rudolf-Bahro-Archiv (in German).
Because of Bahro's stature in the green, left, and environmental movements,
this Tribute was reproduced by others as a Google search would show. It is
also referenced in an Archive of Bahro's works being kept by Humboldt
University, in east Berlin. Anyone discovering Bahro, can become extremely
dissatisfied with traditional green electoralism, because of Bahro's own
experience in the German Green Party. Through Bahro's writings, I believe
electoral greens can be encouraged to move forward in the direction of a
left biocentric analysis. So it is important that Bahro be better made
known. Hence the web page addition.
A charge of "ecofascism" has been made in the past against deep ecology by
some, and a similar critique was levelled against Bahro by some social
ecologists and some inside Germany, like Jutta Ditfurth, a traditional
leftist who was in the German Green Party. From my perspective, Bahro was a
giant green philosopher and thinker, and left biocentrists are very much
indebted to his ideas. Like all of us, he had his flaws, some of which are
discussed in the Ecofascism bulletin (#68) section on Bahro, which is also
on our web site. My wife, who reads German, tells me that there will be a
conference on Bahro's work next November in Germany at Humboldt University
on the occasion of the anniversary of his birthday.
(We also has given on the web site the reference to the Russian
translation of the "Deep Ecology Perspectives" article published in the
Russian ecology journal, and previously published in Synthesis/Regeneration.)
Best, David
