Black Cultural Archives is seeking to recruit a Researcher/Oral History
Interviewer to
research and develop an exhibition on the lives of black people who have
been Mayors or who have played a key role in local government in London and
other parts of the country and also to interview black people who have lived
in the Clapham Park area of London, especially those from the Windrush
generation. Funding has been secured for six months for this project.
This position will suit a researcher/post graduate student or a suitably
qualified person who is looking for part-time work.

Overall purpose:
The purpose of this post is to research on the lives of black people who
have been Mayors in London and throughout the country and their involvement
in local politics.
To conduct oral history interviews of black people who have lived/are living
in the Clapham Park area of Brixton - especially descendants of the Windrush
generation and other groups within the Clapham area of Brixton who have made
a contribution to black British history.
Specific duties
Conducting research into the lives of black people who have been Mayors in
London and other parts of the country and to obtain photographs where
possible and also biographies
Research into the lives of black people who have played a role in local
political history in London and other parts of the country and to obtain
photographs where possible and also biographies
To assist in writing text for an exhibition based on the research
To interview black people in the Clapham area of Brixton and other groups
who have made a contribution to the development of black British history;
using audio and/or videotapes.
To identify interviewees
To obtain photographs of interviewees where possible
Where possible, to collect memorabilia and other archival objects during
these interviews
Writing and printing of texts for exhibition
Keeping within the budget allocated for the research and interviews and
liasing with the Project Director in this respect.
Working closely with the Project Director to maximise the potential of the
exhibition and interviews
Performing such other duties as may be allocated by the Project Director
Person specification
Minimum three years experience of research and reminiscence work in history
or related activity or of developing and co-ordinating education and
research projects related to black history in Britain (e.g seminars, talks,
schools and community group programmes)
Educated to at least degree level.
Knowledge and understanding of contemporary issues regarding British black
history & heritage and current debates
Working knowledge of and experience with a variety of community groups.
Excellent administrative skills
Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team
Good communication and inter-personal skills
Good research skills
Computer literacy
Selection criteria
Typing skills up to 45 wpm
Knowledge of Microsoft Word 98, 2000, Excel, Access and Power Point
Ability to communicate orally and in writing
Experience of administrative and office practice procedures
Ability to deal with enquiries from members of the public, organizations and
the media
Ability to use initiative
