Sadly Martin, Each profession has its lurkers and shirkers and it is
generally the 'usual suspects' who provide comment or feedback. We (as
a profession) do quite well in actual fact. Other groups such as ALGEO
(Association of Local Government Ecological Officers) have much smaller
'active' groups. My thoughts on the on-line discussion centre on
structured debate rather than the ad hoc nature of our discussion lists
which is what I liked about the original FISH on-line discussion. Also,
I would find these discussions or meetings more useful and interesting
if they avoided what I would term detailed technical matters, the stuff
of working parties and the like (some might say these are 'anorak'
issues - not me of course! More than happy to continue to debate
'on-list' such ground breaking stuff as 'when is a monument not a
monument' and whether a desk-top assessment constitutes an
archaeological event or not).
Cheers
Bob

Some useful points, thanks Jim. However only so much can be accomplished
on an email list and you can underestimate the value of actually getting
people together at a meeting. Also its the same SMRs/HERs who are
represented at the meetings as make their opinions known on the email
list. Its the others who neither attend the meetings or engage in the
email discussions that we most need to reach as these are the ones who
are potentially out of touch with what's going on, and would therefore
probably benefit most from attending. These are also the ones who have
been conspicuous by not commenting on why they never attend.
