German Film Festival
Monday, 8, until Sunday, 14 December 2003
IFI Cinemas, 6 Eustace Street, Dublin 2
The German Film Festival at the IFI, organised by the Export Union of
German Cinema in association with the Goethe-Institut Dublin and the
Irish Film Institute will showcase an impressive selection of new
German cinema. All films will have their Irish premiere at the
festival, offering the audience an insight into the latest works by
filmmakers from Germany.

The Champions (Die Champions)
Dir.: Christoph Hübner, Germany 2002
Multi award-winning journalist Christoph Hübner's latest documentary
focuses on the dream of becoming a professional soccer player.

The Miracle of Bern (Das Wunder von Bern)
Dir.: Sönke Wortmann, Germany 2003, colour, 118 min.
With The Miracle of Bern, director and ex-football player Sönke
Wortmann has brilliantly succeeded in setting an intensely emotional
and touching family drama against the exhilarating, authentic
background of West Germany's miraculous World Cup victory in 1954.
International festival screenings include Montreal 2003, Warsaw 2003
and Locarno 2003, where the film won the Audience Award.

Over Night (Über Nacht)
Dir.: Horst Krassa, Germany 2002, colour, 98 min.
With fragile camera optics and cool pictures, Over Night is a study
about love, longing and loneliness. After its world premerie in Hof
2002, the film was presented at the Berlinale 2003 among other
international film festivals.

Karamuk
Dir.: Sülbiye V. Günar, Germany 2002, colour, 94 min.
Karamuk is a wonderfully charming coming-of-age film about a 17 year-
old German-Turkish girl Johanna in search for her identity. The film
was presented at the Hofer Filmtage 2002, and at the international film
festivals in Gothenburg 2003, Berlin 2003 and Warsaw 2003.

Ghettokids
Dir.: Christian Wagner, Germany 2002, colour, 87 min.
Ghettokids tells the story of two foreign teenagers in a socially
explosive neighbourhood in Munich. The film was shown at numerous
international film festivals, i.e. Munich 2002, Montral 2002,
Gothenburg 2003 and Giffoni 2003.
Wednesday, 10th December 2003, 9.00 p.m.
A Little Bit of Freedom (Kleine Freiheit)
Dir.: Yüksel Yavuz, Germany 2002, colour, 98 min.
Set in Hamburg's immigrant quarter of Altona, home to the world-famous
red-light district, the Reeperbahn, A Little Bit of Freedom tells the
unsual story of the friendship between two young men. Presented at
Cannes 2003 (Directors' Fortnight).
Thursday, 11th December 2003, 9.00 p.m.
Elephant Heart (Elefantenherz)
Dir.: Züli Aladag, Germany 2002, colour, 100 min.
19-year-old Marco dreams of the social ascent of his broken family and
of becoming a professional boxer. Elephant Heart received the Bavarian
Film Award for Best New Producer and Best Cinematography.

From Dachau With Love (Grüsse aus Dachau)

Bernd Fischer's documentary is a tragic-comic portrait of Dachau, the
little Bavarian town that yearns to be just another place name on the
map of Germany. But there is no magic solution for disconnetcting
Dachau from its grim past.

The Family Jewels (Eierdiebe)
Dir.: Robert Schwentke, Germany 2003, colour, 88 min.
The Family Jewels is an offbeat comedy, full of black humour, set in
the cancer ward of a hospital, where 'One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest'
meets 'The Addams Family'.
