3.1 ALT-N: last chance to book adverts for January!

3.2 Development of an ALT accreditation scheme: invitation to
participate
A project is currently in progress on behalf of ALT, funded by JISC, to
create and pilot an accreditation scheme for learning technologists.

We are currently looking for people to take part in focus groups, which
will be used to explore opinions about the scheme, its scope and format.
We may also be undertaking a small number of site visits to describe
and illustrate practice. If you would be interested in taking part in this,

4. EASA 2004
The deadline for the European Academic Software Awards is imminent.

Deadline for first round: 23 December 2003
The first round requires a general description of the entry (no software is
submitted until the second round).
Entries are welcomed from further and higher education, and from
commercial organisations (if the product has been developed in an
educational institution). EASA welcomes entries from students,
graduates, teachers and researchers, who can register either individually
or in teams. Software is defined broadly as applications used for
teaching and research, covering tutorials, simulations or tools (including
VLEs).
The finals will be held in Le Locle, Switzerland, 25-27 September 2004.

5.1 A Future for UK Theses

The JISC and The British Library are pleased to invite you to a major
national seminar on the future of academic theses in the United
Kingdom. Building on the work of the JISC FAIR programme, this
seminar will provide an opportunity for the community to contribute to
developments in both electronic and print theses submission, delivery
and storage in the UK.
The seminar will be followed by a wine reception and attendance is free
of charge.
5.2 ePrints UK workshop

In 2004 the ePrints UK Project (http://www.rdn.ac.uk/projects/eprints-uk/)
will be running a series of 5 workshops around the UK that will provide
an introduction to eprints and institutional repositories and the issues
surrounding them. These workshops will be aimed at HE/FE librarians,
information systems staff and academics, and will be free to attend.

5.3 When Worlds Collide Conference
Wednesday 18 / Thursday 19 February 2004
Le Meridien Royal York Hotel, York
A JISC infoNet conference to explore cultural differences between
academic and systems practitioners and the management implications
for institutions developing Managed Learning Environments. The event
is supported by HEFCE, UCISA and ALT.
Day One will consist of presentations, an exhibition of institutional
projects addressing these issues and an Open Forum with a panel of
experts. Day Two will consist of a half-day 'Think Tank' where a range
of issues based on the themes covered in the conference sessions will
be discussed and the output used as the basis for a HEFCE-sponsored
publication. Numbers for the 'Think Tank' are limited and will be
allocated on a first come, first served basis.
Bookings need to be made by the 7th January to guarantee the
overnight stay in the conference hotel.

5.5 UCISA2004 Annual Management Conference: Customer first!

5.6 Grand Challenges in Computing (GCC '04)

The Council of Professors and Heads of Computing (CPHC) and the
British Computer Society (BCS) in association with the UK Computing
Research Committee (UKCRC) are pleased to announce a major
conference on Grand Challenges in Computing (GCC '04).
One of the strands, Grand Challenges for Computing Education,
involves identifying major goals whose attainment will lead to significant
improvements in the educational processes associated with Computing.
This is to be interpreted in a broad sense.

6.1 JISC Invitations to Tender
6.1.1 Frameworks Scoping Study
The Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) is seeking to
commission a study to inform the new Frameworks Programme. The
aim of the programme is to 'Develop and evaluate a framework to
facilitate interoperability across learning, teaching, research and their
supporting systems.'
Up to £75, 000 (including VAT and expenses) is available for this study
over a 5 month period (March - July 2004). Tenders should be submitted
no later than noon on Friday 30 January 2004.

6.1.2 Data Centres Option Study
The Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) has issued an
Invitation to Tender to undertake an investigation of possible data
management, hosting and delivery solutions for content created through
the Comprehensive Spending Review (CSR) Digitisation Programme.

6.1.3 Mirroring Service
The JISC is seeking to procure a high quality Mirroring Service on behalf
of UK FE and HE. The Service will run for a three-year period from 1
August 2004 to 31 July 2007, with an option to extend until 31 July 2009,
subject to performance and ongoing demand for such a service.
The service will include:
a) the mirroring of freely available technical software resources
(mandatory);
b) the mirroring of freely available academic and scholarly resources
(optional).
The closing date for Requests to Participate is 12 noon GMT on 12
January 2004.

6.1.4 JISC Consultation Workshop series
The JISC invites tenders to provide written reports on the JISC
Consultation Workshop series, covering the following three topics:
Building Collaborative eResearch Environments
Information as a Strategic Resource
Bridging the Divide: Transition between Schools, FE, HE and Research
Bidders may submit tenders for one or more workshop topics. However,
these should be submitted as separate tenders. The tenders should
demonstrate the knowledge and expertise of the bidder in the relevant
topics.

6.1.6 Open Access Publishing
The JISC has issued an invitation to tender inviting proposals from
academic publishers or learned societies looking to move to an open
access model for their journal(s). JISC will award short term funding to a
small number of publishers or learned societies who agree to waive
open access submission and publication fees for UK HE staff for a one-
year period and who best meet the evaluation criteria as set out in the
ITT.
The deadline for submission of proposals is 12 noon on Monday 2
February 2004.

6.2 Other JISC news
HEFCE have appointed Professor Sir Ron Cooke to be the new Chair of
its Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC).
Succeeding Professor Maxwell Irvine, Sir Ron's prominence and
experience within the education community will ensure that as the
importance of Information and Communications Technology (ICT)
becomes increasingly recognised within the post-16 and higher
education and research communities, JISC's work will continue to
develop to meet the needs of these communities.
Sir Ron Cooke will take up his post in January 2004.
6.3 LTSN -ICS news
The December edition of the Newsletter is now available online
containing information on items such as software designed to deter and
prevent Internet plagiarism, e-learning aimed at specific audiences within
UK higher education, The Education Image Gallery and a preliminary
survey of attrition and retention in CS departments in the UK. The

MISM programme. Essential duties and responsibilities include:
* Manage the creation and development of subjects for online
instruction and delivery.
* Contribute to pedagogy development and the application of
instructional and learning technologies.
* Teach one or more online subjects on an ongoing basis.
* Provide leadership to and supervise adjunct faculty.
* Contribute to the overall development of the school, its academic
programmes, and educational planning and policy formulation.
* Maintain currency in relevant disciplines and online learning.
For the MBA programme, candidates with teaching and research
expertise in all areas are sought. For the MISM programme, candidates
should have interests or expertise in two or more of the following areas:

All candidates must have a PhD degree, teaching experience and a

Adjunct Faculty

to teach online subjects on either the MBA or MISM programme.
Contracted to teach subjects over a 12-week period, Adjunct Faculty will
lead and facilitate all aspects of instruction, including mentoring and

guiding and evaluating student project work and other assignments,
responding to individual student requests/ queries, and similar functions.
Candidates should have a PhD degree or equivalent professional
