Alexander figures prominently in John Lyly's first play _Campaspe_.
He is infatuated with Campaspe, captured in his conquest of Thebes, but by
the end of the play he overcomes his infatuation and heads off to war
again. It has been argued that his noble rejection of love makes him a
type of Elizabeth, but the parallel is not entirely convincing.
