medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (5. November) is the feast day of:
Elizabeth (1st cent.) Elizabeth was the mother of John the Baptist and a
cousin of Mary. Oddly, there doesn't seem to be any extra-biblical
tradition about her.
Zacharias (1st cent.) Zacharias was father of John the Baptist. Luke's
gospel tells that he was a priest, stricken dumb because he doubted when
Gabriel told him he was going to beget a son in old age and only recovering
when John was born. Luke chapter 1 is the only source of information on
him.
Galation and Epistemis (?251?) Legend tells that Galation was a Christian
who converted his wife Epistemis. The two then entered monasteries (in the
3rd century!) and were martyred in the reign of Decius at Emesa. They
actually never existed; their story was a reworking of the Greek fable of
Clitophon and Leucippe.
Bertilla of Chelles (d. c. 705) Bertilla was a nun at Jouarre (near Meaux,
France) who became first abbess of the double monastery of Chelles. She
served for fifty years, making the new foundation a great success that even
attracted a large number of English monks and nuns.
Gerald of Beziers (d. 1123) Gerald was an Augustinian canon who became
bishop of Beziers (near Montpellier). He won fame by spending most of his
income on the poor.
