italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
Visconti scholars seem to be unanimous in declaring that
Visconti actually read the novel in French translation, in
a copy given to him by Jean Renoir, when they were working
together on Tosca. (However, there seems no concrete
evidence of the Visconti-Renoir-Cain transaction, and I
would be interested to hear of any). Also, I am not aware of
a French translation existing at that time, and some
sources indicated that Renoir gave Visconti a typescript of
the novel, suggesting an unpublished translation.
Also, according to Mario Alicata, 'Luchino propose di
'rifare in italiano' Il postino suona sempre due volte, che
egli aveva visto ridotto in francese. Leggemmo il romanzo,
chi piu chi meno..' (Letter to Pio Baldelli, 1965), cited
in Gianni Rondolino, Luchino Visconti (UTET, 1981), p. 109.
So it would seem that Visconti saw Pierre Chenal's 1939
French film of the novel: Le dernier tournant, although,
again, there is little evidence that I have seen to prove
this.

Cain's "The Postman Always Rings Twice" was translated by Giorgio Bassani as "Il postino suona sempre due volte" and published by Bompiani in 1945, three years after Visconti directed "Ossessione". However, I would consider both the book and the movie more in the tradition of the "noir" genre than in the "giallo" category.
