Dear Jim,
Nice if you have a "district museum", but Selby doesn't. The Yorkshire Museum does not take "watching brief" material. The work was carried out before briefs included such niceties as "re-burial", and anyway, it was a pagan burial from RB times. The legal successor owner is a waste disposal company: I know what they would do with the finds!
Cheers,
Neil

Can I ask why you have these human remains in your office, Neil?
Here in South Yorkshire, we require contractors to make arrangements for dealing with all finds and site archive material prior to starting the fieldwork. For human remains, reburial is arranged where appropriate. Otherwise all finds are deposited with the appropriate archive, usually the district museum (taking into account the wishes of the legal owner of the finds, of course).
Only the report comes here to the SMR. The one thing we don't want is the dear departed hanging about our office. We have enough experience of staff impersonations of this already...
Jim

Subject: Re: Human Remains & Reburial
Dear All,
Not only that, but all organisations holding skellies should be licenced by the Human Tissue Authority. We've got a couple of boxes of human skeletal remains, and may get more from time to time. Will we have to go through another layer of bureaucracy just to receive the smallest scrap of human bone from a watching brief ?? A review of the report is given on the following web site http://www.spiked-online.com/Articles/00000006DFDE.htm
Cheers,
Neil
