Hello Prof Sullivan,
The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare
(http://www.aihw.gov.au/cognos/cgi-bin/ppdscgi.exe?DC=Q&E=%2FAHS%2Fprincipald
iagnosis) has a nice presentation of the ICD9-CM codes for the time period
between 93-94 to 97-98 from Australian hospital data.
You are able to choose to display, for each code, the number of separations,
the number of patient days or average length of stay. Though ALOS and patient
days may not correspond perfectly with the length of the illness, it may
still be helpful for you.
All the best,
Aventis (Australia)

Dear all.
Is anyone familiar with information regarding the average duration of
illness corresponding to ICD-9 codes?
Thank you,
