Colleagues;
I am greatly saddened to have to inform the cephalopod research community
that Katharina Mangold died of a heart attack on Monday, 10 November, in
Basel. Although her health had caused lingering problems for several years,
her passing seems to have been mercifully swift.
Renata Boucher is the person closest to the situation. She has told me
that funeral arrangements have not yet been determined, but she thinks that
perhaps the service may be Wednesday or Thursday of next week in Basel. I
will forward further information as I get it.
My fondest memories of Katharina are from the time that we spent together
at sea on several cruises off Hawaii. Her absolute love of cephalopods was
a shinig highlight of those times. She was also the only person I know who
could stop a major research vessel (to swim). I would like to pass along a
suggestion from Mark Norman. Because Katharina's friends are spread around
the globe, Mark proposed that we each raise a glass in a toast to her at
sunset in our area. That way she will have a 24-hour tribute.
Sincerely,
Mike
