TRANSATLANTIC PROGRAM RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS 2004
The University of Erfurt is committed to international scholarly cooperation
and exchange. As part of its Transatlantic Program, sponsored by the German
Federal Ministry of Economy and Labor's ERP fund, the University of Erfurt
offers the following research fellowships to U.S. citizens:
Two Carl Schurz fellowships for doctoral studies of six months duration,
including a monthly stipend of EUR 850 and travel expenses up to EUR 100.
Two Maria Sibylla Merian fellowships for postdoctoral studies of three
months duration, including a monthly stipend of EUR 1400 and travel expenses
up to EUR 1000.
American students and scholars applying for these scholarships should be
working on topics related to the culture, society, economy, history and
politics of Central Europe for which they need to evaluate source materials
located in Germany. Preference will be given to scholars who will use the
holdings of the Forschungsbibliothek Gotha, housed in the 17th century
Schloss Friedenstein. This library, part of the University Library of
Erfurt, contains one of Germany's largest collections of 17th and 18th
century books and manuscripts.

The deadline is January 31, 2004. There are no application forms to be
filled out. Dossiers should include:
- A curriculum vitae
- A research proposal of no more than 10 pages (including an itinerary)
- For doctoral fellowships: Two letters of recommendation, one from the
primary advisor
- For post-doctoral fellowships: One letter of recommendation Indication of
the preferred months of tenure
