LETTER OF INVITATION

by

Kicki Nordström, Sweden, Chair of the International Disability Alliance,
President of the World Blind Union,

Bernhard Heinser, Switzerland, DAISY Consortium, Organising Committee of
the Global Forum

to give input to
and to attend the

GLOBAL FORUM ON DISABILITY IN THE INFORMATION SOCIETY
www.forum-on-disability.sbszh.ch
Geneva, December 12, 09.30-18.00, Room Mont-Blanc

and the

BANQUET
hosted by the
Swiss Federation of the Blind
Hôtel Chavannes de Bogis (near Geneva),
December 11, from 19.00 to 23.00

The UN event World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) takes place
in Geneva from December 10 to 12, 2003. The outcome of this Summit will
be the so called Declaration of Principles and Action Plan with respect
to a future worldwide Information Society. In tis moment, as we are
writing this letter, it seems that the needs and requirements of persons
with disabilities are not really cosidered and reflected in these papers
(see www.wsis.org).

It is evident that the Information Society could facilitate the life of
many millions of persons with all kind of disabilities in the case their
needs and requirements would be considered. To underline the importance
of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in the Information
Society for persons with disabilities a special full day side-event to
the UN World Summit will take place under the title:

GLOBAL FORUM ON DISABILITY IN THE INFORMATION SOCIETY
Geneva, December 12, 09.30-18.00, Palexpo (Summit Venue), Room
Mont-Blanc

Please note that registration (see
www.forum-on-disability.sbszh.ch/registration_form_en.htm) is necessary
in order to have access to the Summit venue at Palexpo in Geneva.

The main objectives of this exceptionel event are as follows:

a) To begin to build an international worldwide platform for the
disability community with respect to the Information Society (there will
be a second phase of the Summit in Tunis in November 2005).

b) To create the opportunity to bring together three concerned sectors:
disaX-Mozilla-Status: 0009rnmental organizations dealing with disability
issues, business sector

c) To decide on a Resolution including an Action Plan (from Geneca to
Tunis) and cosidering the needs and requirements of persons with
disabilities in the Information Society.

The draft Agenda of the Global Forum on Disability is as follows:

1. Opening Session: Key notes, statements of concerned organisations and
entities. We hope that you as representatives of the worldwide
federations of persons with disabilities will give your statements
within this section.

2. Second Session: Best Practice Show-Case. Six to eight short
presentations of persons with disabilities handling information
technology. Presentations with concrete achievement or suggestion of
Information and Comunication Technologies that meet special requirements
of persons with disabilities.

3. Third Session. ICT Design and Development for All. Four to six
üpresentations. Best examples of ICT Designs and Development that meet
individual requirements of persons with disabilities and benefit all
individuals in the community.
We hope that you and/or your organisations will propose some interesting
presentations for the second and third session (see "Call for
Presentation" at www.forum-on-disability.sbszh.ch/program_en.htm.

4. Fourth Session: Discussion and Decision on a Resolution that states
the needs and the requirements of persons with disabilities in respect
to the Information Society. A first draft of this Resolution will be
posted in the middle of November at the Global Forum's Website, a second
draft a few days before the event on December 12. This second draft will
be discussed and decided upon in the fourth session. We hope that there
will be a lot of input coming from you and/or your organisations.

We would like to cordially encourage you and to invite you to come to
Geneva and to help actively to make a success of the Global Forum on
Disability in the Information Society. At the same time, we kindly ask
you the permission to put your organisation on the list of those
organisations and entities that are supporting the idea and the reality
of the Global Forum on Disability in the information Society.

Please let me know as soon as possible whether we can put your
organisation on the mentioned list.

It is a pleasure for us to invite you as well to the BANQUET hosted by
the Swiss Federation of the Blind that will take place on December 11,
from 19.00 to 23.00 in a hotel near Geneva (Chavannes de Bogis). The
banquet will create the opportunity to get in contact with many persons
coming from over the world and to discuss the measures to be undertaken
in order to ensure the access to and the accessiblity of ICT for persons
with disabilities.

The Organising Committee is doing its best to make the stay for
participants, especially for persons with disabilities we want as
numerous as possible to come to Geneva, as comfortable as possible. You
will find on the especially established website
www.forum-on-disability.sbszh.ch the necessary practical information
(mandatoriy registration to the World Summit on the Information Society,
hotel booking opportunity, special needs and requirements for persons
with disabilities attending the Global Forum.)

Please do not hesitate to contact us in case of further information
needed or if you have any question:
