There is also a hidden agenda to abolish some of the SHO posts, nationally. Our place has taken on 6 H grade nurses and is spending 6 months training them up to be ENP's to cover the orthopaedic dept. They then envisage getting rid of 6 SHO's. Some of the Consultant staff have suddenly woken up to the fact and are going ballistic. I envisaged it was going to happen and suspected the A & E dept. would be next. It certainly would solve a lot of problems.
The sad thing is that the powers that be only get away with it because there are members of our own profession who give them the green light with the awarding of merit awards and discretionary points and are quite prepared to sell the profession down the river for their own personal gain.
Best wishes
