Geographies of Collecting
HGRG Session, RGS-IBG Annual Conference
IGC, 15-20th August, Glasgow, UK.
The study of collecting has a significant geographical dimension. The
practice of collecting and collections depends on the translation of
artefacts, images or art works through space; their storage in particular
sites; and frequently their display in a variety of specific places. There
are cartographies of collecting to be mapped, networks to be traced, through
which the collected object acquires value; and moreover, these values may
change as collections move through space and time. Groups of collectors
constitute their own communities, with their own rules and mores about what
constitutes appropriate modes of collecting, and what constitutes a good
collection. Collections may carry a wide variety of meanings, public and
private: they may sustain grand narratives in natural science and art
history, or they may offer means through which personal identities are
performed. The geographies of collecting raise a variety of issues,
theoretical, methodological and practical. The session aims to provide a
forum in which these issues can be addressed in a focused way; and to engage
with the contemporary meanings of material and virtual collections in the
twenty-first century.
We are keen to involve both researchers and practitioners working in this
diverse field. Papers could address the following themes:
- The collected object: The multiple lives of collected artworks and
artefacts
- Collecting communities and networks
- Sites of collecting: The spatialities of display and storage of amassed
objects
- Spaces and modes of acquisition
- The fashioning of collecting identities
If you are interested in participating, please email your abstract of less
than 250 words by Monday 15th December, to the session convenors:
