ROMANO BILENCHI: DALLA RESISTENZA AI NOSTRI GIORNI
One-Day Conference
Friday 31 October 2003 - Auditorium, Magdalen College, Oxford
With the Support of: the Italian Cultural Institute, London
Associazione Amici di Romano Bilenchi and Comune di Colle Val d'Elsa (Siena)
The aim of this one-day conference is to bring to the attention of students and scholars from the UK the work of Romano Bilenchi (1909-89). A major twentieth-century Italian prose-writer, Bilenchi's work is both well-known in Italy and has been translated into several European languages, but has enjoyed less prominence in the English-speaking world. He was a direct contemporary of Vittorini and Pratolini, and like those authors originally belonged to the more radical 'left wing' of the Fascist party in the 1930s before becoming a committed communist. His tightly crafted short stories were much admired by Calvino, and are best exhibited in the trilogy of novelle published under the title of Gli anni impossibili in 1984 (though two of the three stories were written in the 1940s). His other major works are the novels Conservatorio di Santa Teresa (1940) and Il bottone di Stalingrado (1972), and Amici (1976), an evocative series of verbal portraits of friends such as Vittorini, the artist Ottone Rosai, and Ezra Pound.
