I think the logical thing is to consider extending Midas, but I was loathe to suggest it as it is another thing to think about, however, in the long term I think it is inevitable.
As to managing it and using it, it would be yet another thing to add to the backlog, but then again I would use it for new records, and I think it is something we should be recording where we can.
best wishes

Taking Nick and Ben's replies together, I very much agree with you in principle, but this is far from simple, and as far as I know it's an issue that has received very little attention until now.
Rather than fudging the monument concept this would probably need a new entity within the data model. So instead of hanging information about landscape context off existing monument records, perhaps we need to be recording relevant palaeo-landscape feaures in their own right, then cross-referencing them with monuments etc where relevant.
One for MIDAS II ??
Does everyone agree that our data model should extend in this direction? Would it be used? Would (and should) SMRs/HERs have the expertise and resources to populate and maintain such a palaeo-environmental record meaningfully?
If HBSMR users can start to think about what is required (if anything), perhaps we could discuss it at the User Group meeting?
