To Ronit Lentin:
Just back from Dublin, I would like to make a correction:
ESA, the European Sociological Association, the president of which I
currently am, has not proposed to boycott Israeli academics. I was,
as an individual member, before my current position, one of the
organisers of a collective letter to the Israeli government about the
destruction of the Palestine Central Bureau of Statistics offices, and
in that connection proposed that ESA should condemn the action. It
decided not to.
The initiative to boycott Israeli academics was independent of this
and it is clear that the ESA as an organisation cannot have anything
to do with such an initiative. On the other hand, I believe that the idea
of Michael Guggenheim to demand that the EU treat equally Israel
and its neighbours in the matter of research funding and cooperation,
is a good one and should be pursued via the proper channels.

Secondly, as has been suggested by several people on the list, if the
ESA decides to boycott Israeli universities, it MUST boycott US and
UK universities.
