Scope one of Britain's largest charities SCOPE has closed off its Headquarters and all activities at the Peto Institute for three days as a result of the Disabled People's Direct Action Network's intention to protest outside their buildings.
Scope is concerned that visitors to the centres in London will be accosted by protesters and have told people to stay away.
DAN is campaigning for an end to non-disabled run charities and proper funding of organisations run by disabled people. DAN believes that disabled people are strong enough and ready to speak for themselves without the misguided help from charities.
A statement issued today from DAN reads:-
DAN has been campaigning for disabled people for over 10 years and has never been violent to any member of the public.
Indeed the only violence or abuse of human rights that will be occurring on the 3 days of protest will be in the residential institutions run by organisations like SCOPE. We think it is deplorable that SCOPE is using this lie to close down its operations.
Whilst spreading malicious lies about our organisation, which is, based on Ghandian principles SCOPE are denying their own customers the right to hear the arguments.
DAN will be at Scope headquarters on Monday at 11 am. to engage Scope in a public debate about its role and its future. We are dismayed but not surprised that they are seeking to avoid this.
