One thing I have observed between US and UK transport legislation is that the USA and Canada are miles ahead on accessible fixed route transport, while the UK and Europe are far ahead on accessible taxi transport. Although the current licensing of inaccessible mini cabs, undermines accessible taxi regulations.
Of course we need full access to both types of transport. Of course, my priority would have to be accessible mainstream transport.
The UK Department of Transport (DoT) has commissioned numerous papers on transport and disabled people - the vast majority (if not all of them) were not done in consultation with the UK's disabled community. One little mistake they made was that while powered wheelchair users were required to be clamped in 'welfare; vehicles in the 70's and 80's. No published tested were made beyond that of manual wheelchairs. These clamps would have been totally ineffective with motorised wheelchairs.
I still can not get over the repeated suggestion that the London Underground system is referred to 'public transport' when a million Londoners are denied access due to its poor design. It has steadily got less accessible since the 1930's.
I think the world's disabled community need to thank Adapt for leading the way.
