1.What are the main ways that you use, or would like to use, online
images in your work?
We would like to use online images as a catalogue for our collection
which has not currently got a display area/gallery. If the collection is
digitised ( we have bid for funding), the images will be available as part
of the library catalogue as well as through the general website. The
collection is relatively unknown and inaccessible to all but those who
know it but we aim to promote its presence to students, particularly 3d
design and history of design students. It would also complement other
School of Art collections online and would be useful way for us to link up
with other work being done at other institutions. I would also like to use
the images as a first step in selecting objects to study, without the need
to remove them from storage unnecessarily.
2. What is your general role and/or background?
I am an objects conservator, currently employed with AHRB funding to
undertake a conservation audit. As my position is to be made
permanent by the University, I and my colleague are responsible for a
much wider remit, anything to do with the collection: from all aspects of
conservation, future acquisitions, creation of a permanent gallery,
research into the collection and promoting the collection to a wider
audience.
3. What do you like or dislike about online image collections/facilities
that you have encountered?
I particularly like the Stoke Potteries Museum online image collection as
a useful research tool with sufficient information supporting the various
collections shown.
Some of the larger institution's online images appear to be quality rather
than quantity, a huge number of images but without the supporting
informtion to be able to use the collection in a useful way, eg V & A .
