Before the last RAE I suggested all the Geography Departments in England
and Wales went in as one unit of assessment, to avoid the unhealthy
spirit of competition, and the re-creation of the binary divide in UK
geography.
My colleagues at the time thought this was laughable - but it is
interesting that Scotland is considering such a thing in some
disciplines (perhaps with an eye to $$, rather than the ethical
considerations and the protection of fast-disappearing smaller Depts. I
was thinking of).
N America and Europe seem to do just fine without such systems -
although the image of the US depertments of Geography as 'richer' or
more research-productive that UK ones, and therefore not needing such a
funding model, is a misplaced perception.
