Background:
Motorola is one of the world's leading providers of wireless communications,
semiconductor technology, advanced electronic equipment and services for
customers and markets around the world. Products include cellular telephones
and systems, two-way radios, pagers, defence and aerospace electronics,
automotive, energy and industrial electronics, computers, data
communications and information processing and handling equipment.
Our core strengths in components and communication technologies, coupled
with our vision of the future, have allowed us to make long-term investments
for the creation of new industries and develop mobile and fixed
communications products that have set and will continue to set the standard
in the market place.
Motorola Labs develops novel ideas from conception, through analysis and
simulation, to proof-of-concept demonstrators. Our remit is to identify, and
advance through research, the technologies needed for future products.
Motorola's commitment to technology and research is reflected in the
excellent resources available.
Summary of the Posting:
Joining a small group of Human Factors specialists working within the
Motorola UK Research Laboratory on a 6-month contract, the post holder will
apply user-centred design and usability techniques to investigate user
requirements for future innovative wireless services and applications. Focus
will be on investigating the user requirements for mobile multimedia
applications within the context of a European part-funded 6th framework
research project.
The post holder will be required to investigate multimedia user
requirements, interactions and interfaces, taking an application-focused
approach and considering products and services that will reach the market in
5 to 7 years. This includes evaluation of different multimedia research
technologies in terms of their effective integration in future wireless
devices; cross-disciplinary communication skills are therefore essential.
This 6-month position will involve fundamental human factors research within
a European collaborative project, in which the post holder will be working
with universities and European organisations researching in the domain of
wireless applications and interfaces. Travel within Europe is therefore an
essential part of the job.

project experience, preferably in the context of an international project,
would be a benefit. In addition, we seek experience in one or more of the
following:
. user-centered design process
. user requirements elicitation
. scenario development
. user interviewing
The postholder will need to work within multidisciplinary project teams
where he/she will be expected to contribute towards integration of user-
centred design principles with technology development. In addition, the post
holder should be highly self-motivated with the ability to work unsupervised
and take responsibility for delivering results. Cultural sensitivity when
working in a multi-national team and a commitment to ethics are essential.
Qualifications: Good first degree in psychology or computer science with
preferably a higher degree and/or research experience in human factors or
human-computer interaction.
Salary:
A competitive salary will be provided.
The Motorola UK Research Lab:
The Motorola UK Research Laboratory is one of two European research
laboratories in Motorola's corporate research arm, Motorola Labs. The 30+
multidisciplinary lab members focus on technologies and applications for
both private and public wireless communications. The laboratory is located
in part of a large site on the outskirts of Basingstoke, fifty miles to the
southwest of London.
