HERITAGE PROTECTION REVIEWS: CBA DRAFT RESPONSE TO ENGLAND REVIEW NOW AVAILABLE
The Council for British Archaeology has recently updated their webpages on the Government's heritage protection reviews, which are being undertaken concurrently in England and Wales. These reviews are examining systems and proposing changes for protection of historic buildings, archaeological sites, historic wrecks and historic landscapes and areas. The reviews represent the widest ranging set of reforms proposed for decades and could drastically change the way in which England and Wales' archaeological inheritance will be cared for in the future.
We have recently added to the website a draft of the CBA's response to the review in England. We are making this available to
* help stimulate informed debate;
* promote responses from organisations and individuals who may have an interest in the review;
* encourage input to the final response by the CBA.
Time remaining for responses in England is short - the public consultation closes on 31st October 2003. In Wales the consultation will extend until 21st November. You can access our response (as a summary of key points, or as a full draft), as well as links to the government's consultations documents online at:
http://www.britarch.ac.uk/conserve/designationreview/
The CBA is keen to promote a wide response to this review - the outcome will be the publication of Government Heritage White Paper for England and Wales (probably in late spring/early summer 2004) leading to new heritage legislation which may be with us for some years to come.
If you have any views on what the CBA should be saying in our final response to either review then please feel free to contact us.
Many Thanks
