Hello Tim and others
I have been made aware that this may be an issue for us, but am not sure what the implications are. For some sites I am not bothered e.g. SM's - I digitised these against Raster maps anyway (as that is what the EH maplets use), so they have always been slightly out, and are only meant to be indicative not definitive anyway. Also I expect (hope??) to get definitive mapping from EH at some point, so don't see much value in rechecking these. If a few metres accuracy is that important in a DC context, it is likely that EH would be involved anyway, in which case it all becomes their problem, and if they aren't involved, we would be checking the documentation anyway.
However, other things I have digitised based on vector data might be more problematic. Where they have been snapped to the vector data I have recorded this in the metadata, as also if they have been digitised versus the vector data, so even if I don't yet have a solution, it should be easy to identify which records are likely to be affected! What I am going to do about it is not clear, but as we are not getting this mapping for a while I am not going to worry about it. I expect that once we complete various data imports and other tasks and are ready to start validating the records, we should have the mapping, so I expect to sort it out at that stage. Might one option be for you to record in validation data that the mapping may be out as a first step??
Also as you say, 5 metres isn't that much to worry about, as I tend to view most of our mapping of archaeological data as indicative rather than definitive. The standard caveat about SAM boundaries not marking the edge of the archaeology, in my view, applies equally well to our monument mapping. I suppose in terms of event mapping I might be slightly more concerned. However, in terms of events and monuments, many are still in as points anyway, so the whole accuracy thing of boundaries is kind of a moot point
best wishes
