CALL FOR ARTICLES
The American Journal of SEMIOTICS,
An international quarterly research publication of the Semiotic Society of
America.
Special Issue Theme: Pierre Bourdieu: A Sign
Manuscript submissions are invited for a special issue of The American
Journal of SEMIOTICS, Volume 20, Number 4, scheduled for summer 2004
publication.
Pierre Bourdieu was a prolific French scholar whose thirty plus books and
many monographs were augmented by his commitment to political activism.
Considered a sociologist, his genius defies disciplinary classification,
spanning several decades, and drawing upon his extensive knowledge of
philosophy, anthropology, economics, communication, and culture. His
original conceptualizations of field, forms of capital, and habitus
synthesized empirical data and phenomenological insights. The special issue
will explore Bourdieu's semiotic legacy, an overarching and timely theme,
given his recent death.
Submissions dealing with (but not limited to) the following are welcome:
*Philosophical and/or theoretical analyses that discuss Bourdieu as a human
scientist
and/or his impact on the social sciences
*Methodological discussions that explore his unique concepts and constructs
*Applications of his ideas to current communicative contexts
*Biographical sketches, Book reviews and Lengthier review essays
