My definition of knowledge management is the process of making tacit
knowledge (the knowledge we all carry in our heads about how to do
something) explicit (i.e. documented), and I don't think this necessarily
dictates a high-tech solution.
For example: how do you prevent a long-serving member of staff taking 20
years worth of knowledge with her when she retires? Ask her to document her
procedures in a manual before she leaves.
This also applies to current staff of course - making their knowledge
available to others. Good record keeping is one answer and the records
management skills of providing guidance about the best way to create, store
and retrieve records is invaluable.
Better get back to my publication scheme now...
