The KHM (Kunsthochschule für Medien / Academy of Media Arts) in Cologne
is one of the leading film and media academies in Germany. We are very
pleased to welcome Prof. Anthony Moore, the Principal of the KHM, who
will introduce the Academy's study programme and present some of the
award-winning works that have come out of it in recent years.


KUNSTHOCHSCHULE FÜR MEDIEN KHM / THE ACADEMY OF MEDIA ARTS

Teaching began at the KHM in Cologne in 1990. The curriculum is centred
on an integrated programme, "Audiovisual Media", which is run by the
Academy's four sections: Arts, Design, Film and Television and Art and
Media Studies, thus bringing together all those media that intersect in
praxis but often remain separated in study courses. In an average of
seventy seminars per semester and praxis-oriented workshops, different
ways of thinking meet: theory encounters practical design,
technological programmes and artistic imagination combine. This teaches
students a sense of their social and political responsibility as
artists, designers, directors, and authors. High priority is given to
experimental creative praxis in conjunction with the acquisition of
technical competence. Work in the atelier, studio, and laboratory,
together with the seminars, forms the curriculum's centre of gravity.
The teaching staff at the KHM is an international team of professors
and assistant lecturers who are part of a world-wide network of
fellows, guest lecturers, and experts thus facilitating cooperation
with other academies and universities in Germany and abroad, with
cultural institutions, television organisations, and the media

EDUCATIONAL FILM ABOUT STATE SECURITY FILES
(Lehrfilm über die Rekonstruktion von Stasiakten)
Documentary by Anke Limprecht. Germany 2000, 16mm, b/w, 12 min. No
dialogue.

A film about the daily work of the task force "Reconstruction" within
the "Gauckbehörde" - the official agency that has restored, archived
and made accessible the files compiled by the former East German
Ministry of State Security (Stasi). A tightly composed and subtly
humorous film about German history. (Best Documentary Tampere Festival
2002).

TRANSPOSED BODIES (Fremdkörper)
Photo novel by Katja Pratschke. Germany 2002, 35 mm, colour+b/w,  28
min, German spoken, English subtitles.

Jan and Jon are two inseparable but very different friends who are
jealous of each other's physical and mental capacities. The both fall
in love with Marie, and Marie falls in love with them. When both of
them lose their heads in an accident, they become the subjects of a
medical experiment that leads to surprising results. (German Short Film
Award in Gold, 2002)

SPRING (Jump)
Directed by Oliver Held. Germany 2002, 35mm, colour, 7 min, no
dialogue.

Nine-year old Franz has just jumped off a diving board when he suddenly
remembers something..... With the help of the most modern computer
technology we become witness to what goes on in Franz' mind as he is
falling.

THE WHIZ KIDS (Freunde)
Short film by Jan Krüger. Germany 2001, 35mm, colour, 22 min, German
spoken, English subtitles.

Two sixteen-year-old boys spend their days racing, hanging out,
watching videos and playing hide-and-seek. Boundaries begin to fade,
finally disappear. Their friendship changes but it is never quite clear
what it changes into. (Silver Lion for the Best Short Film, Venice Int.
Film Festival 2001).

COMPOSITION FOR FOUR STAIRWELLS AND ONE PERSON
(Komposition für vier Treppenhäuser und eine Person)
Experimentalvideo by Olaf Geuer. Germany 2001, Beta SP, colour, 3 min,
no dialogue.

Four staircases made from different materials and with different sound
characteristics are the percussion instruments in this experimental
music video inspired by the absolute film of the 30's and developed
from an interest in the interaction of picture and sound.

CHILDREN OF HONEY (Enfants du Miel)
Puppet animation by Anja Struck. Germany 2002, 35mm, colour, 7 min, no
dialogue.

"Enfant du miel" is a surreal story about a meadow with flying bees,
the queen-bee eating her meal and a sweet-toothed hare, who is looking
for honey.

GOT TO GO (Ich muss gehen)
Road musical by Florian Mischa Böder. Germany 2001, 35mm, colour, 11
min. German sung, English subtitles.

The late night stickups, cruising around, the songs shared...or the
wife waiting at home with the daughter who needs a father. A musical
about a man who has to decide between his life with his fellow singing
bandits or his family. Music will help him on his way.

TUBE SWAPPER
'Documentary' by Meike Walcha. Germany 2003, Beta SP, colour, 19 min,
English spoken.

Meike Walcha's short 'documentary' presents a whole new approach to the
London Underground. She tells a story about swap junkies talk frankly
about their motivations and reasons for their passion and take us for a
ride on the underground. (FIRST STEPS Award, best short film 2003)

FRIDAY NIGHT (Freitagnacht)
Feature film by Franz Müller, Tom Uhlenbrunk, Jens Schillmöller, Tini
Tüllmann, Philipp Schäfer and Jan Martin Scharf. Germany 2002, 35mm,
colour, 75 min, German Spoken, English subtitles.

FRIDAY NIGHT is made up of six episodes, loosely connected, describing
the odyssey of a handful of characters through nocturnal Cologne. Each
episode is written and directed by a different aspiring young director
from the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne under the watchful eye of
GOOD BYE LENIN director Wolfgang Becker.
