Announcement of Special Issue of
Seminar: A Journal of Germanic Studies
Seminar, together with guest editors Marianne Henn and Sabine Sievern
from the University of Alberta, is inviting submissions for a special
issue devoted to
Immigrant/Emigrant Experience and German Culture
Over the centuries, millions of people have migrated between countries
for social, political, and economic reasons. At times, the New World
drew people for its ample opportunities and more recently, various
countries around the world, most of all in Europe, have provided a new
home for immigrants seeking a haven from social, political and/or
economic struggles. Among these migrant groups, the German-speaking
immigrants left their respective countries especially in the 18th, 19th
and early 20th centuries, while the German-speaking world today is more
so an emigrant culture. This project, which stems from the "Culture and
the State" conference held at the University of Alberta in May of 2003,
intends to bring together a wide range of papers dealing with various
aspects of the topic of immigration and emigration in connection with
German culture. Scholarly submissions may deal with German immigration,
especially to the New World in the course of time reflecting on both
the image of the home country as well as that of the host country.
Further topics might include, but are not limited to, the migrant/guest
worker experience in the German-speaking world, the gendered migrant
experience, etc.
Scholars interested in this project should consider the following:
The deadline for submission of articles is June 30, 2004. Earlier
submissions are welcomed. Please prepare manuscripts so that they can
be anonymously reviewed. Please prepare the manuscripts according to
MLA style and refer to the Seminar website for specific Seminar-
guidelines (e.g. no endnotes, minimum of footnotes, length of articles)
or consult previous issues.
Since issues of Seminar may be limited as to number of pages, some of
the submissions to this special issue may appear in subsequent issues
of the journal. However, all accepted submissions will be published in
Seminar.
