Research Assistant(s)/Associate(s) - two part-time or one full-time
European Work and Employment Research Centre (EWERC)
Manchester School of Management, UMIST
Length of appointment: October 2003 - December 2004
Vacancies are available for one full-time or two part-time researchers to
work on two projects funded by the European Social Fund (ESF) which have
recently been awarded to staff in Manchester School of Management. The first
project examines the impact of organisational change on gender
discrimination in the areas of recruitment, skills acquisition, progression
and pay/working time and the second project investigates the role of the
childcare sector as provider of both care and employment.
The successful applicant(s) will play a major part in the full range of
project activities, but principally this will include interviewing
respondents at the selected case study sites, designing and administering
surveys, analysing data and writing up case studies, and contributing to the
preparation of papers for publication. The post(s) will involve some travel
mainly to case study organisations located in the North West of England.
Shared office accommodation is available in EWERC, and the researcher(s)
will be expected to add to the co-operative research ethos of EWERC and MSM.
The Manchester School of Management has approximately 70 permanent academic
staff and over 45 externally funded research staff, a 5 A rating for
research and an 'excellent' grading for the quality of the education it
provides.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Applicants should ideally have a higher degree and some experience of
conducting research in the social sciences (including possible PhD research)
preferably in a subject relevant to the project.
The successful applicant(s) will have high standards of oral and written
English and competent computer skills, have strong team working skills and
able to interact with people from all organisational levels.
An interest and/or expertise in employment studies/gender is desirable.
Potential opportunities to work on other research projects in EWERC during
the contract and after its completion may be available.
Salary will be on either RA1A or RA1B scale ranging from £18,265 to £27,339
(pro rata for part-time appointments) depending on age and experience.
