Thank you for your insights. I learnt much from Amanda, including the
concept about assisted decision making I wrote about. Some years ago, when
my (now ex)wife was away for six weeks on a well earned holiday, Amanda and
I had our first opportunity to establish a direct relationship. In the past
it had always been traffic via mother. This was largely due to my long
absences when at sea, and also because I was always an inadequate parent not
having had a role model myself.
When I suggested we do things as a team, Amanda took to it with great
enthusiasm, and still when we do things together, Amanda will say "we do it
as a team!" This took a lot of pressure away from being a father as it
substituted a major eleement of being a friend, as well as a father, and the
team thing assured the equality and respect.
Assisted decision making I have always been wary of as it sounded
patronizing, bureacratic and marginalizing. On a trip to Brisbane (to see
Mama Mia) I learnt from Amanda the value in discussing every choice, every
decision in the three days of the trip. It was magical. Although choices
often had to be 'steered' somewhat, we were able to reach a concensus, even
in connection with drinks and diet, where her preferences tend to be the
things that will make her more overweight. Amanda even suggested we have
breakfast on the (QueenSt) Mall. I mentioned that it was a fair walk (8
blocks) and we would not get fed till about nine. We discussed what we would
do in the meantime - we are both early rizers, 0600 or earlier. We decided
we wouldm have a cup of coffee, and she would do some of her jigsaw
puzzles, while I wrote up my day book.
It worked perfectly, and has become the routine since. Sharing the decisions
has proved empowering, and is a cornerstone of our relationship.
