Call for Papers
Conference 2004
THE POLITICS OF DESIGN:
History, Theory, Criticism & Practice
University of Ulster at Belfast
9-11 September 2004
This is the first time that the DHS conference has been held on the island
of Ireland. This interdisciplinary conference aims to explore the politics
of design in history, theory and practice. Panels that analyse the overtly
political in local, national and global design as well as the politics of
the personal are sought.
Possible topics may include, but are not limited, to the following:
• The political economy of design
• Propaganda and design
• Eco-design and sustainability
• The politics of nationalism, globalisation and design
• Sexual politics and design
Please email or post proposals for panels, consisting of a chair and three
speakers, on a named theme by 16 January 2004 to the conference convenor.
Panel organisers should provide the following information:
• Full name, institutional affiliation (if relevant) & contact details of
the session
organiser (who may be the chair or one of the speakers), chair and
3 speakers
• The title of the panel
• The title of each paper
• A summary of the theme of the panel (max 150 words), followed by an
abstract for each paper of no more than 150 words

Abstracts for single papers will also be considered. Please note that the
convenor reserves the right to substitute papers in panels. Papers should
not exceed 30 minutes in delivery time.
