It's a bit confusing; if you mean to say it's (probably) due to a
previous Windows98 installation on the same machine/disk then it's not
the case here. The machine came with Linux installed and was being used
for a EDG 1.4 WN for almost a year. Or you said some thing else?

Though I didn't check the 'local partition table' (as you suggested at
the beginning) but I did try 'dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/had bs=512k
count=100' and got a message '/dev/had: readonly file system' or
something like that. So that didn't work as well. I'm going to try once
again though.
