Dear All,
We have added a section to our website which provides access to a new series of factsheets relating to planning and archaeology in England. We are briefly inviting comments anyone might have on the factsheets - ideally by the end of the first week of September 2003.
The factsheet series has been written by the CBA to help archaeological, heritage, amenity and community groups as well as interested individuals understand how they can have a say about the way in which planning shapes or affects their local historic environment. The focus is mainly on 'strategic' planning and the factsheets cover the following topics:
* Factsheet 1 - Getting Involved in Planning for Archaeology and the Historic Environment
* Factsheet 2 - The UK's International Obligations and Commitments for the Historic Environment
* Factsheet 3 - National Planning Policy for Archaeology and the Historic Environment
* Factsheet 4 - Regional Planning Guidance and the Historic Environment
* Factsheet 5 - Development Plans, Archaeology and the Historic Environment
* Factsheet 6 - Local Plan Policies and the Historic Environment
* Factsheet 7 - Minerals and Waste Local Plans and the Historic Environment
* Factsheet 8 - Historic Characterisation, Planning and Regeneration
* Factsheet 9 - Development Briefs and the Historic Environment
* Factsheet 10 - Sources of Further Advice and Guidance/Further Reading
You can access the factsheets at:

The series has been written at a time of considerable reform to the planning system in England, and where possible we have tried to note the likely ways in which the system will change. It is our aim to review these factsheets once new provisions are put in place.
The compilation of these factsheets was undertaken as part of a wider project to explore and promote greater 'stakeholder' involvement in planning for archaeology, which was in part supported by an award from the English Heritage-managed Heritage Grant Fund. We have added the final report of this project to our website, and this contains information which which may be of wider interest - in particular the results of a survey of the activities and interests of local archaeological groups and societies (to which about a third of societies in England responded).
You can access the project report and an abridged summary and recommendations at:

Many thanks
Alex Hunt
