UK University Staff Declaration against The
Occupation of Iraq
We, the undersigned, are all staff members at UK
universities.
We opposed the invasion of Iraq because of:
its illegality in international law;
its undermining of international organizations
such as the UN; the harm to combatants and
civilians by cluster bombs and radioactive
munitions; the destabilization of the region and
the stimulation of extremism and terrorism. The
military invasion of Iraq has now been
completed, with the expected injuries to the
Iraqi population and to the international order.
We now oppose the occupation of Iraq.
We call for:
withdrawal of the UK and US forces of occupation,
and their replacement by a multinational
peacekeeping force; a UN team to be allowed back
into the country to search for and disable any
weapons of mass destruction; the UK government to
work against a widening of the conflict to
neighbouring countries; the cancellation of
rebuilding contracts, issued by the US government
before hostilities were commenced, and the issue
of new contracts under open tender for the
rebuilding of the country; the occupying
countries to pay reparations to the Iraqi people,
including funds and expertise for disabling
unexploded cluster bomblets and for cleaning up
radioactive debris.
