Just a quick reminder that places are filling fast for the Global Health and
Foreign Policy Symposium 18-19 September 2003. There is a strictly limited
number places available - so be sure to register now so you don't miss out
on this landmark Symposium......
In recent years there has been an increase in awareness of the critical role
of health to economic development. It has also become apparent that no
region is immune to the problems of others. Regional conflicts are
heightened by socioeconomic and disease inequalities. Better health is
linked to higher income and is likely to lead to more stable societies.
The Global Health and Foreign Policy Symposium builds on the growing
international interest in the link between health and foreign policy. The
Symposium is a collaboration between the Institute for International Health
at the University of Sydney and the School of Public Health at the
University of NSW, together with the Nuffield Trust, United Kingdom which
will critically explore and debate the implications of this concept in the
context of Australian interests and capabilities.
Discussions will be led by International and Australian leaders in the field
of health and foreign affairs. These include The Hon Kay Patterson
(Commonwealth Minister for Health and Ageing, Australia), Professor John Wyn
Owen (Director, The Nuffield Trust, UK), Professor Ron Labonte, (Director,
Community Health and Epidemiology, University of Saskatchewan, Canada) Mr.
Julian Lob-Levyt, (Chief, Health and Population Adviser, Department for
International Development, UK), and Professor Peter Baum.
The two days will provide lively debate on health in relation to
humanitarian aid; the role of trade; health, human security and human
rights; global health governance - through panel discussions, interactive
workshops and Plenary Sessions.
