Subject: History of Photography & Disabled People
I am proposing to undertake an MA by independent study in the history of
photography and disabled people (part time).
I am particularly interested in UK material before the 1980s, as I
consider that the record of earlier years in terms of photographs should
not be just sourced from circuses and freak shows, nor predominently
from medical archives, but also from other, equally authentic records.
As part of this proposal I have been asked by the university department
to set out in more detail the photographic archives I plan to research,
including their type and scope of material. Initially I suggested the
informal archives of a few national disability voluntary organisations
which were set up early in the 1900s or earlier, which I will explore
further.
But I would welcome any suggestions. I know this material is hard to
find, and I would welcome any suggestions and contact details for
possible archives, formal and informal.
I can be contacted at [log in to unmask] .
Thanks,
