Position Announcement MIAMI UNIVERSITY (OHIO)
Multiple Positions in Russian Studies
Miami University is seeking colleagues for tenure-track hires at the
assistant professor level in Russian Studies. The successful candidates
will
be eligible for a tenure-track appointment in the Department of
Comparative
Religion, the Department of Geography or the Department of Political
Science
and for a joint position in the interdisciplinary International Studies
Program. The search committee is seeking candidates interested in broad
interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary enquiry who are also capable of
offering courses from introductory to graduate level in their
disciplines
and who have sub-specialties as indicated:
* Religion in Russia. Knowledge of Orthodox Christianity is essential,
and
ability to teach about Judaism, Islam, and other traditions in the
former
Soviet Union is highly desirable. Also desirable is competence in
broader
areas intersecting with Russian religions such as the history of
Christianity, Jewish studies, or medieval or modern religious thought,
with
possible offering of cross-listed courses in History, Philosophy, and/or
Jewish Studies. Ability and willingness to participate in discourse on
theoretical approaches to religious studies is required.
* Geography of Russia and/or Post-Soviet Republics. Ability to teach
Geography of Russia required. Preferred focus on urban, economic,
social,
cultural, environmental, or political geography, or other social science
specialization within Geography.
* International Political Economy, with a regional focus on Russia
and/or
the Post Soviet Republics. The position, which would be a tenure track
position in the Department of Political Science, would be a joint
appointment between the interdisciplinary International Studies Program
and
the Department of Political Science.
The successful candidate would teach post Soviet topics in international
studies, international political economy, Russian/Post Soviet politics
and
(at the introductory level) international studies and either
international
relations or comparative politics. Successful candidates will have
access
to research funds and will work in close association with the Havighurst
Center for Russian and Post-Soviet Studies directed by Professor Karen
Dawisha. The Center with its community of post-doctoral fellows, its
programs focused on the study of the politics, society and culture of
the
post-Soviet region, and its participation in both the graduate and
undergraduate teaching missions of the University offers a supportive
professional arena for scholars specializing in Russian studies. All
hires
would be expected to devote a portion of their time to activities
sponsored
by the Havighurst Center, in particular the development of colloquia and
symposia focused on various aspects of Russian studies.
The Committee will begin to consider applications on October 15, 2003,
and
will continue until the position is filled. The Committee will hold some
pre-interviews at the AAASS in Toronto in November, with on-campus
interviews in November and December. More information about Russian
