In the mid 1990s a series of messages on the Critical Geography Forum focused on garden research within geography. It seemed as if a lively debate might get off the ground and garden researchers might make some useful links, but it fizzled out all too soon. The baton is about to be taken up again with the very first geography conference to explore garden research.
There is still time to book a place. Further details follow.

'HORTICULTURAL GEOGRAPHIES'
University of Nottingham, UK
WEDNESDAY 17th - THURSDAY 18th SEPTEMBER 2003
This special two-day conference will focus on recent work on gardens,
gardening and horticulture within human geography and other
spatially-informed disciplines.
In the past ten years, gardens have become arenas of intense interest.
Note the surge of garden makeover programmes on television, the increase of
garden related books and magazines, the boom in garden visiting as well as
garden centre trade, and the growing interest in community gardens,
allotments and therapeutic gardening.
Likewise, gardens are increasingly the subject of academic research. In
response to this blossoming interest, and to celebrate Geography's
long-standing concern with garden research, this will be the first major UK
conference to bring together researchers working in the field of
horticultural geography.
The conference provides an opportunity for scholars from a variety of
disciplinary backgrounds to bring together their work in the field of
horticulture and gardening.
The conference will address the following themes:
British and International Perspectives
Well Being & Identity
Political and Economic Geographies of Horticulture
Historical Perspectives
Embodiment, Bodily Practice Memory and the Garden
Conceptual Geographies of Horticulture.
Speakers include:
Mark Bhatti (University of Brighton).
Professor Andrew Church (University of Brighton).
Professor David Crouch (Universities of Derby, Karlstad and Kalmar).
Professor Stephen Daniels (University of Nottingham).
Professor Mark Francis (University of California, Davis).
Professor Gert Groening (Berlin University of the Arts).

garden historian and journalist) and a guided tour of the University gardens
by Ian Cooke (Grounds Manager, University of Nottingham).
