I'm not sure Ruth quoted "time off in lieu" in addition to double pay/treble
pay, as this would be tantamount to treble pay/quadruple pay respectively.
Anyway, what St Mary's were offering may well have been locally negotiated
following local BMA *recommendations* at the time but the current proposals
on the table are far from this Elysian ideal, Goat!
Just to set the record straight, the government are now offering
consultants - and the BMA have accepted - time-and-a-third for out-of-hours,
and that's after 7pm, not 5pm, and is to include work after midnight,
weekends and bank holidays. These rates are only offered for actual resident
duties for these times, and not for on-call from home. The profession is
still debating this offer, but is quite likely to accept it. Well, if they
don't accept it, it will be because of other contentious clauses, and I
expect the out-of-hours rates themselves will be accepted.
