There have been significant OOH concessions to Milburn's "non-
negotiable" contract since the NO vote and rumblings about industrial
action (whatever happened to Milburn?),
I think one of the concessions was that OOH would be voluntary. Will
time-and-a-third be attractive enough for you to volunteer for regular
Sundays and bank holidays etc.?
Maybe yes, maybe no. The point is that as long as there is no compulsion
to do OOH, then the rate will have to be set at a level that attracts
sufficient interest from the profession.
Where the OOH rate has been allowed to find its own level, rates have
ended up a lot higher than time-and-a-third. Plenty of examples from
local agreements on OOH resident sessions, waiting list initiatives etc.
Why do you think HM Gov were so desperate to make basic rate OOH
resident sessions compulsory?
No compulsion for OOH must be an absolute pre-requisite of any new
contract. The OOH rate offered will then define itself.
You might wish also to consider this train of thought:
new contract aims to clip private practice wings,
GPs allowed to buy out of OOH completely for 6k p.a.,
more fixed sessions at behest of your line manager / CEO / MD....
Where do you think the pressure point will be applied for you to boost
your earnings by "volunteering" for Saturday night and Bank Hol resident
sessions for the paltry crumbs on the table.
Think on.
