I'm a firm believer that the Consultants and Staff Grades should have the
same weighting for unsocial hours and I had negotiated a rate of 1.5 for A&E
middle grade and senior staff in this Trust. So the Staff Grades at Kendal
and Lancaster get 2 sessions extra for working the 40 hr shift per week.
With the audit / CPD sessions this means they are on 13 sessions... though
financially that still doesn't compete with GP land.
Of course the new Consultant Contract deviates from this. Indeed currently a
Consultant session is 3.5 hrs and with the New Terms this would only go down
to 3 hrs out of hours.
The GPs seem to be planning on offering their services to the PCT for out of
hours for a £50 per hour rate. I've pointed out that experienced doctors in
A&E and GP out of hours should be on a level playing field... whatever the
rate is.
