Manhood End, or Mainwood End, is a real location,
though now under the sea. It is just off Selsey Bill
and is marked on an 1833 chart of "The Solent and
Spithead" published by Heather and Norie together
with the (also submerged) "King's Deer Park".
From a recent planning application to Chichester
Disctrict, there is still a Manhood End Farm on the
A286 near Birdham, and I have seen references to the
Manhood Lock at the Chichester harbour end of the
Portsea/Chichester canal.
Sorry, but I can't help with the folk story.
With best regards
